Business Case

Business cases describe of possible projects or business activities. They describe benefits, usually of monetary nature, analyse the market situation, provide risk assessment, such as entry level or competitive situation, and determine required resources. Business cases serve as vital instrument for management decisions to use available resources optimal. Business cases allow to determine projects that offer the best business merit, which comes usually with high benefit / risk ratio.

The business case should contain the following information (minimum):
  • Name - Project name
  • References - Origins, background
  • Context - Business objectives / opportunities, business strategy alignment
  • Value Proposition - Desired business outcomes, benefits
  • Return - ROI Financial scenarios
  • Risks - Market risks, project risks, costs of not proceeding
  • Competition - Competitive market situation
  • Deliverables - Measurable outcomes and deliverables
  • Stakeholders - Key stakeholders, dependencies, organizational areas impacted
  • Required resources - Project leaders, team resources, funding
  • Commitment - Project controls, reporting processes, deliverables schedule, financial budget schedule
